Labour Gas Tax – Why Are Bills So High?

Australia is one of the biggest gas exporters on the planet. We ship liquefied natural gas all over the world, the value of those exports has grown more than twenty-fold over the past 25 years, and yet… your energy bill hasn’t reduced. If you’ve stared at your quarterly statement and thought, “Hang on, aren’t we swimming in the stuff?” — you’re not the only one! And this month, that exact question landed squarely on the political agenda with the Labour gas tax.
Labour Gas Tax – What Happened?
At its recent national conference, the Labor Party formally agreed that Australians deserve a “fairer return” from the resources sitting beneath our land and seas. Sounds reasonable enough. The interesting part is what they didn’t do.
A proposal has been floating around, championed by the Australia Institute and an unlikely alliance of supporters, for a 25% tax on gas exports. Backers think it could raise up to $17 billion a year. That’s not spare-change money; that’s “fund a lot of things” money. But Labor stopped short of actually backing the tax itself, choosing the language of a “fairer return” without committing to the policy that put it on the table.
In other words, strong words but no signature on the dotted line. You can read the full story over at The New Daily, and the group leading the push is the Australia Institute.

Why The Gap Between Exports And Your Bill?
Here’s the bit that trips a lot of people up. It feels like being a big gas producer should automatically mean cheap gas at home. But because so much of our gas is sold overseas at global prices, local prices tend to follow the world market rather than a friendly “mates rates” domestic discount. Think of it like living next door to a bakery that exports all its best bread to Europe – the smell is glorious, but you’re still paying full price at the counter.
A new gas export tax, if it ever happened, would be about the government’s share of industry profits, not a direct switch that drops your bill next quarter. So while it’s an important debate, it’s worth being clear-eyed: this is a “watch this space” story, not a “your power bill is about to halve” story.
Rising Energy Bills – What This Means For Your Household
Political debates are slow. Your rising energy bills are not. So rather than waiting for Canberra to sort it out, the smart move is to focus on the things actually within your control:
- Know your numbers. You can’t trim what you can’t see. Our quick guide on how to track your spending in 5 steps is a painless place to start.
- Give your budget a service. Energy is just one line in the household ledger. A tidy, realistic budget makes every price rise easier to absorb — that’s the heart of our cashflow and budgeting work.
- Zoom out. Gas prices, tariffs, interest rates — it all connects. If you like understanding the bigger picture, our Economic Snapshot and our take on what the Trump tariffs mean for your money are good companion reads.
The truth is, no single headline, gas export tax or otherwise, is going to make or break your finances. What makes the difference is having a plan that keeps ticking along whether the news is good, bad, or just plain confusing. That’s exactly what our goal setting and planning approach is built for, and it’s a lot less stressful than refreshing the news every morning.
