Best Black Friday Sales in 2026 (And How to Budget For Them)
This year, we’re here to help you do it differently. Below you’ll find the key dates and some of the best Black Friday sales in Australia so far, plus a simple plan to grab the bargains you actually want without a January credit card hangover.

Black Friday is a bit like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Walking in is absolutely thrilling, everything looks amazing, it all feels like a bargain, and you promise yourself you’ll “just have a little bit of everything.” An hour later you’re horizontal on the couch, wondering why you went back for a third plate of dumplings and a dessert you didn’t even like.
Last year’s Cyber Weekend drove a record $23.8 billion in spending, according to CommBank data reported by Mozo. Meanwhile, around 40% of Australians admit they overspend during the Black Friday, Christmas and Boxing Day sales.
So this year, we’re here to help you do it differently. Below you’ll find the key dates and some of the best Black Friday sales in Australia so far, plus a simple plan to grab the bargains you actually want without a January credit card hangover.

Black Friday Budgeting in 6 Steps
1. Write a list before you browse
Before you open a single sale email, write down what you genuinely need or want: Christmas gifts, the laptop on its last legs, the vacuum held together with gaffer tape. If it’s not on the list, it’s not on the menu.
2. Set your number (and use money you already have)
Decide on one total Black Friday figure and treat it as a hard ceiling. Ideally that money is already sitting in your account, not money you’re hoping to have by January. Not sure what you can spare? Moneysmart’s free budget planner is a great starting point. If you’re a freelancer, contractor or on commission, our guide to budgeting on an irregular income has you covered.
3. Check prices now, before the sales begin
The ACCC encourages shoppers to check prices before sales start, so you can tell whether a “saving” is real. Good advice, too. Its review of 2025 Black Friday ads flagged potentially concerning practices at around half of the 50 retailers it looked at, including countdown timers that quietly reset and questionable “was/now” prices. Screenshot today’s prices, add items to wish-lists and set yourself price alerts.
4. Read the fine print on “up to” and “sitewide”
“Up to 70% off” can mean one lonely pair of socks is 70% off and everything else in store is 10%. “Sitewide” can come with a surprisingly long list of exclusions. Ignore the flashy sales banner and look at the price of the thing you actually want.
5. Give your cart a 24-hour cooling-off period
Sales are designed to make you feel like you have to act now, with countdown clocks, “only 2 left!” badges and flashing red banners. Our brains are wired to fear missing out on a deal, which is a big part of behavioural finance. So, pop some items in your cart and walk away for 24 hours. Still want it tomorrow, and it fits the budget? Go for it. Forgotten about it already? You just saved 100%.
6. Do the cost-per-use test
A $300 pair of runners you wear four times a week works out to cents per wear. A $90 “bargain” second air fryer that lives in the cupboard is the most expensive thing you’ll buy all year. Remember: saving 40% on something you didn’t need isn’t saving 40%. It’s spending 60%.

Avoiding Black Friday Debt
Credit cards: friend or foe?
A credit card can be a perfectly handy tool, as long as you pay the full balance before the interest-free period ends. Carry a balance, though, and the average standard card rate is a hefty 20.99% p.a. (RBA). At that rate, a $1,000 balance costs roughly $17.50 in interest every single month. That 30% discount gets eaten alive pretty quickly.
Curious how long a balance would take to clear? Plug your numbers into our credit card repayment calculator.
Watch out for Buy Now Pay Later:
BNPL feels harmless because the payments are small. But cutting a pizza into four slices doesn’t mean you ate less pizza. Since 10 June 2025, BNPL providers have needed an Australian credit licence, which means the law now officially treats it as credit. Missed payments can bring late fees and show up on your credit report. That matters a lot when you apply for a home loan down the track.
A simple rule of thumb: if you can’t afford it outright today, BNPL isn’t making it more affordable. It’s just making it later.
Are you already carrying debt?
If you’ve got existing credit card, personal loan or BNPL balances, the best deal this November might be the one you skip. Putting your Black Friday budget toward a debt charging 21% is like locking in a guaranteed 21% return. No sale on earth beats that. If you’re not sure where to start, our debt management advisers can help you build a plan.
Making Black Friday Work For You
Black Friday isn’t the villain here. Used well, it’s a genuinely good time to:
- Knock over your Christmas shopping at a real discount
- Replace things you were going to buy anyway (that dying laptop, the mattress older than your car)
- Stock up on everyday essentials for less
And a bonus habit: whatever you “saved” on a genuine deal, transfer that amount straight into your savings or offset account. That way the saving is real money, not just a nice number on a receipt.
