From July 2026, households in New South Wales, south-east Queensland and South Australia will be able to access at least three free hours of electricity each day, thanks to a new initiative dubbed the “Solar Sharer” offer. The move requires energy retailers in these states to provide the free-power window during the middle of the day, when solar generation is at its peak.
The scheme aims to make better use of Australia’s booming rooftop solar capacity – now installed on more than four million homes – which often produces more electricity than the grid can handle during daylight hours. By encouraging people to run appliances or charge electric vehicles during this period, the government hopes to cut household bills and ease strain on the grid, according to The Guardian.
To access the deal, households will need a smart meter installed, which most retailers can supply free of charge. The offer will initially roll out in the three regulated-retail states, with a national expansion expected by 2027.
Savings will vary depending on how much power households can shift into the free hours. The New Daily estimated that a small household moving 10 per cent of its electricity use into the free window could see around 9 per cent off their bill, while larger households shifting up to 25 per cent could save nearly 28 per cent.
In short, the Solar Sharer scheme is a win for solar efficiency and greener power use – but those who aren’t home during the day may see smaller savings. Still, it’s a step towards smarter, fairer energy consumption across Australia.
