EV Road Fee: Pump the Brakes or Full Speed Ahead?

Just as the party gets going, there’s talk of a new EV Road Fee at the door.

EV Road Fee

If you’ve been keeping an eye on petrol prices lately (and let’s be honest, it’s hard not to), you’re not alone. Record fuel costs have Australians flocking to electric vehicles in droves – more than 15,800 new EVs were sold in March alone, smashing previous records.

But just as the party gets going, there’s talk of a new EV Road Fee at the door.

What’s The Deal?

The federal government has been considering an EV Road Fee for electric vehicles. The idea is simple: EV drivers don’t pay fuel excise (the tax baked into every litre of petrol), so a per-kilometre fee would help make sure everyone chips in for road maintenance. Fair enough on paper.

The problem? Timing and impact.

A new study by the Electric Vehicle Council surveyed over 3,600 drivers and found that nearly one in three prospective EV buyers (28%) would think twice if a road user charge came into play. Working families in the outer suburbs of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane would feel it the most, the very people looking to cut costs by going electric in the first place.

So, is The EV Road Fee Happening?

Not right away. Transport Minister Catherine King has indicated the charge is unlikely to feature in next month’s federal budget, and there’s no clear path through parliament just yet. But it’s still very much on the government’s radar for the future.

What Does This Mean For You?

Whether you’re considering an EV, sticking with petrol, or just trying to make sense of it all, this is a good reminder that the cost of owning a vehicle isn’t just about the price tag on the windscreen. Policy changes, tax incentives, running costs, and resale value all play a part.

Before making any big purchase, it’s worth stepping back and looking at the full picture, including how potential changes like this could affect your hip pocket down the track.
